Executive Overview

Amanda Bardwell has dedicated her working life to retail. She started as a teenager working in a local retailer, setting up the fruit, veggies and the deli counter. After university she worked for a food retail franchise for five years. In 2001 Amanda joined Woolworths in the Supermarket division. From day one she realised this was a company where she could see herself growing her career. She has since held ten roles across the Woolworths Group, including a number of senior leadership roles across multiple divisions. Amanda’s early roles at Woolworths were in supermarkets, spanning buying, marketing, own brand sourcing and business development. Later, she moved to the liquor division. After successfully leading the business integration of Cellarmasters into the Woolworths Group, she turned Dan Murphy’s online around, helping to grow it to over $200m. Liquor also offered her a chance to work directly with many of Woolworths’ thousands of suppliers and to understand more about the journey of product from vineyard to store. Since Amanda’s return to food in 2016, she has led a number of complex portfolio businesses for the Woolworths Group. Her proven ability to build better experiences for customers, to understand how industry trends impact Woolworths, and her commitment to growing great teams has helped her transform the Group’s ecommerce offerings. In just seven years, Amanda built the team which took WooliesX (the group’s loyalty, digital and customer services offering) from a start-up to a $8 billion business. Amanda has an MBA from the University of New South Wales (AGSM) and a Bachelor of Business from Queensland University of Technology. She was awarded a Chief Executive Women (CEW) Scholarship to INSEAD. In February 2024 Amanda was appointed Woolworths Managing Director and Group CEO, with her role to start on September 1.
