As the Chief Data and AI Officer at EnergyAustralia, I lead data and AI across a critical-infrastructure business. In this world, “move fast and break things” was never going to fly, so a lot of my job is showing that you don’t actually have to choose between moving quickly on AI and staying safe. Most organisations treat speed and safety as a trade-off; I think that’s a false choice, and the operating model I’ve put in place is designed to prove it. The idea is straightforward enough: you match the pace to the risk. The low-risk majority of work gets accelerated, and the smaller set of higher-risk calls gets weighed properly before anyone moves. Because most work falls into that first bucket, adoption tends to move faster than people expect, and it’s good governance that lets it move safely rather than recklessly. At EnergyAustralia we’ve put this into practice. We’ve built AI-ready data operations across the enterprise, frontier models are in daily use by over 80% of the workforce, and we run a governance council that exists to clear decisions rather than sit on them. The part people underestimate is that the hard problem here has never really been the technology. It’s the people. Genuine adoption is an organisational change effort as much as a technical one: you’re changing how teams work, earning their trust in the tools, and helping a workforce shift from occasionally using AI to genuinely working alongside it. Getting an organisation and its people ready for a world where humans and agents share the work is where most of my attention goes now.The job is enablement: a business that can move faster and more safely than it could before, and a workforce that’s better set up for whatever comes next
