In my role as Chief Risk Officer, I set the risk appetite and strategic framework for how to optimize risk management, growth, and returns across products and lines of business. In addition to managing risk, we help bankers by providing expertise and insights that lead to innovative solutions.   The challenging nature of our business requires especially clear strategy and direction, and I encourage my teams to paint a detailed picture with concrete goals.   I ground my leadership philosophy in five core principles: 1. Gather advisors with diverse points of view for more balanced decision-making 2. Never stop learning—keeping pace in a rapidly changing field provides new strategies and connections 3. Lead from the front so you’ll understand what’s going on at all levels within the organization 4. Change with the times and have the courage to go down a new path when something isn’t working 5. Play poker, not chess—leadership strategy is about leveraging advantages and taking chances   In my free time, I’m a biography buff. Successful people in business and politics offer so many fascinating real-world examples of problem solving. I practice balance here, too—I’ve found you can sometimes learn as much from Star Trek’s Captain Kirk as you can from history’s great generals.
