As the first Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer of the North Shore-LIJ Health System, Dr. Mieres built the Diversity and Inclusion team responsible for the deployment of system-wide Diversity and Health Literacy initiatives. Under her oversight the organization has been recognized as a top employer for diversity and inclusion, most notably by Diversity Inc. which honored the health system as a “top 10” healthcare institution for diversity two years in a row. In 2020, Northwell ranked No. 1. Other achievements under Dr. Mieres' leaderhip: > Recognized as one of the nation’s top health systems by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Healthcare Equality Index (HEI). Boone Equity of Care Award > HLNY Diversity Leader Award The team successfully created and launched Business Employee Resources Groups (BERGs) and the Dignity & Respect pledge program, educating thousands of employees about the organization’s efforts to treat coworkers and patients with dignity and respect and eliminating disparities in healthcare. The first Employee Resource Group, VALOR, has brought together employees from all walks of life to develop, mentor and recruit veterans and to increase community awareness of the care and services the health system provides to veterans and their families. Leading the organization’s health literacy efforts, Dr. Mieres and team launched new education and training programs for delivering culturally sensitive, patient-centered care, including CultureVision, widely used throughout the organization to help employees grow their cultural knowledge of nearly 50 cultural groups, enabling enhanced dialogue and better experiences for patients and their families.
